Grey Street PS Year 6 Camp

On a warm Monday afternoon, students from Grey Street Primary School arrived at The Summit eager to begin their adventure. After checking into their accommodations, they met with the coaches and teachers at the Stadium. The team leader introduced The Summit coaches, and Calarnee introduced the group to the Five Keys of camp.

These keys are:

Before starting their five activity rotations, they played a game of 50 Up and were shown the BBQ Shelter, including all the important locations around the park. Fran and Calarnee demonstrated how to put on a harness and helmet; Sam then introduced them to a goal-setting strategy called Target, Stretch, and Super Stretch to help break activities down into more manageable steps, and they then moved to their numbered spots. Their activities included Tash’s Ladder, Snowy River Challenge, Giant Swing, Rock Wall, and Inflatables. After this first rotation, everyone gathered back to the BBQ Shelter to make an epic tribe flag for their teams, which each group would get to take back to school with them. The team names which these flags belonged to were: 5 Big Boons, Barra Monkeys, Condensed Milk, IDK Sewer Ratz, and Kentucky Fried Children. To wrap up the day, Sam explained The Summit way of giving written affirmations and compliments; called GMICs (Great Moments in Camp); the students were then informed of the schedule for dinner before receiving some final information from teachers and enjoying some free time.

On day two, the group had breakfast and returned to the Stadium for a session on intentions with Calarnee. They discussed the importance of setting an intention, and what that looks like in action within and outside of camp. Afterwards, a game of Jockeys was played, to be in a state ready to face the three activities before lunch. After which there was a Tribe Challenge and the Monster Course. The Tribe Challenge is where the teams created chants to go with their tribe names and flags, and then performed them in front of everyone, including the judges Mrs. Cavenagh, Mrs. Tingay, and coach Christopher. For the Monster Course, coaches led them through nine obstacles with two tyres, Holy Buckets, Charades, Tarp Catch, Sleds, Ball Puzzle, Big Cargo, Small Cargo, Brucey, and finishing off with the Ball Pit before crossing that finish line. But they weren’t finished. It wasn’t just one, but two laps, a two-lap obstacle course, to emphasize resilience and the importance of self-improvement. The winner had the most improved time from their first lap. Finally, they rinsed off, had a shower, and had some dinner, before ending the day.

It was the final day of camp, and for this morning’s session (after some location confusion), Sam talked with the students from Grey Street Primary School about gratitude, reading out a bunch of GMICs, asking the students what, and whom they were grateful for. After which it was soon time for the last rotation. But before we could start, there was an emergency, some mystical creatures had broken out of an activity that was being worked on, and it was up to the amazing grade sixers to catch them and bring them back. Fortunately, all creatures were brought back and we could resume our plan for the day: one final rotation. At the end of which, each group voted for someone in their group who played to the Five Keys the most, their Values winner. Once completed, the students reported to the BBQ Shelter to have lunch as The Summit staff said their goodbyes. All students then made their way to the buses and were on their way back to school.

In the last rotation of camp, the tribes got to reflect on their camp experience with each other, and were given a debriefing strategy called; Rock, Stick and Leaf (something that rocked about camp, something that will stick with you and something that you would leave behind). This was at the same time they voted for a Values winner, and the winners of those votes are:

For the other results, in which there were many, Snowy River Challenge ended up with this:

On behalf of The Summit and coaches, thank you all for playing all in and joining us in having all the fun, all the best for the rest of the year!
