Mt Hira College Year 7 Camp Blog

The Summit recently had the year 9s from Mt. Hira College enter through the gates for an epic 3-day camp, with eight different activities, a massive mud run, and more.

Day one began as the teachers and students began to get to know the camp coaches, Sam, Spinks, Ant, Matt, and Chase, with an introduction and then a group game of Finger Fencing. After this, everyone gathered into a large circle to witness and understand the importance and safety of harnesses and helmets, thanks to the demonstration by Ant and Matt, which was followed by Spinks showing everyone how a simple goal-setting strategy of Target, Stretch, and Super Stretch can still be highly effective when used. Now it was time for activities, getting the first two of camp in before dinner. Each group headed to their numbered spots (1 for Deesh Money, 2 for Bullants, 3 for Body Building Leprechauns, and 4 for T12) and were then picked up by their respective coach before heading to their first activity of camp. These two rotations were half of the first set of activities: Flying Fox with Spinks, Laser Skirmish with Ant, Rockwall with Sam, and Bush Challenge with Matt. After this, it was time to head up to accommodation, to get ready for dinner before resting up for the next day, although maybe not as restful as originally planned.

Day two rolled in and with a few more tired faces than expected. Regardless of this, how the day would go was still up to the students of Mt. Hira College as it was up to them to set an intention for the day, able to use given quotes, or even The Summit's Five Keys (Have Fun, Play All In, Make Mistakes, Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable and Don’t Go Home Wondering What If), as an option. After this intentions session run by Sam, it was straight into activity rotations. The first two continued the previous set with the groups that hadn't had a turn yet, leaving one before lunch which was part of the new set. Then it was a short lunch break, where there was enough time for prayer and getting changed into clothes for the Monster Course, but then it was go go go! One more rotation (part of the set that contained Spinks with Jump Free, Ant with Snowy River Challenge, Sam with Sky Bridge, and Matt with Orienteering), before beginning the Monster Course.

The first lap of the run saw all four teams give it their all, helping everyone cross the finish line together. Little did they know that they would be going for a round two. This course was all about resilience, who you show up as when you're pushed to your limits, and someone asks more of you. Despite a large amount of resistance, both teams had members to thank, team players who made sure most if not all members would make it through the second round, allowing all teams to come out the other side with times of improvement, having finished faster than the original laps. After this, everyone had well-deserved showers before dinner, followed by a quieter evening activity.

The final day of camp began with a gratitude session run by Sam, who highlighted the importance of recognizing what we already have in our lives and taking time to be grateful for them. After this, everyone gathered down to the BBQ shelter for a game of Jockeys, run by coach Liam who would be joining the group who were yet to do Orienteering in their last two rotations, which was up next once the game was over. These two final rotations were completing the activities groups had not yet done, and after a final rushed finish of these activities, it was time for lunch and results, and some well-deserved thank yous for everyone involved in making such an epic camp possible.

Not all results were able to be given during this time, so to make sure everyone is acknowledged for their amazing effort in this camp and the activities involved, these were all recorded results for:

Snowy River Challenge:

1. 22:57 T12

2. 35:33 Bullants

3. 35:28 Deesh Money

4. 38:18 Body Building Leprechauns

Bush Challenge:

1. 24:19 T12

2. 25:07 Deesh Money

3. 28:14 Bullants

4. 32:51 Body Building Leprechauns

Monster Course Improvement Times:

1. 7:28 Body Building Leprechauns

2. 7:02 Bullants

3. 6:17 T12

4. 5:34 Deesh Money

This was an amazing camp to be part of, and that wouldn't have been possible without the incredible staff and students of Mt. Hira College. From all staff from The Summit, we'd like to thank you for making the camp what it was.
