Adventure Camps Victoria: Building Confidence inStudents

For many children, confidence doesn't come from being told they can do something. It comes from discovering it for themselves. That's one of the great strengths of adventure camps Victoria schools can access: they give primary school students opportunities to try unfamiliar things, overcome challenges and experience the satisfaction of achieving something they weren't completely sure they could do.

At The Summit, adventure activities are designed to stretch students in a supportive environment. The goal isn't simply to create an exciting few days away from school. It's to help young people discover that they are often more capable, adaptable and resilient than they realise.

Confidence Comes From Doing Something Difficult

There is something powerful about a physical challenge because success is tangible.

A student might begin an activity feeling nervous or uncertain, but by the end they can look back and say, I actually did that!

That might mean completing the Snowy River Challenge, arriving at the finish line wet, muddy and exhausted, but victorious. It might mean taking another step higher than they thought they could on a climbing activity, tackling an obstacle they initially wanted to avoid, or contributing to their team when things became difficult.

These experiences create a very different kind of confidence from simply receiving praise.

Students have evidence that they can persevere.

That sense of achievement can stay with them long after camp is over.

Why Adventure Camps Victoria Schools Choose Can Build Independence

Confidence also develops when children spend some time outside their normal environment.

At school and at home, students are surrounded by familiar routines, familiar people and familiar comforts. Camp changes the setting.

There is still careful supervision and support, but students have to take greater responsibility for themselves. They need to keep track of their belongings, get themselves organised, adjust to different sleeping arrangements, participate in unfamiliar activities and navigate several days away from their usual routines.

For primary school students, these may seem like relatively small things. Collectively, however, they send an important message:

    I can adapt.

Students begin to realise that being somewhere unfamiliar doesn't mean they cannot cope. They can solve problems, ask for help when they need it, adjust to change and keep moving forward under their own steam.

That growing independence can be an important building block for confidence back at school as well.

Camp Gives Different Kids a Chance to Shine

The students who are most confident in the classroom aren't necessarily the students who thrive most quickly at camp.

That's part of what makes outdoor education so exciting.

A child who tends to sit quietly in the background at school may suddenly discover they are an excellent climber on the abseil wall. Another student might be surprisingly calm and confident at height on the ropes course. Someone who rarely takes the lead in a classroom activity might emerge as the person encouraging their teammates through a difficult challenge.

Changing the environment changes the opportunities available to students.

Teachers can see abilities that aren't always obvious in the classroom, and classmates often begin to see one another differently too.

For the student involved, that can be significant. Discovering an unexpected strength gives them something new to build their identity around: I'm good at this. I can contribute. I can be brave.

    Confidence Grows Through Safe Challenge

Building confidence doesn't require throwing children into situations they cannot handle.

In fact, the best adventure experiences provide an appropriate level of challenge while maintaining clear boundaries, experienced supervision and encouragement.

Students can feel nervous without being unsafe. They can encounter difficulty while knowing there are adults nearby to guide them. They can be encouraged to stretch themselves while still approaching challenges at an appropriate level.

Over the course of a camp, those individual moments begin to accumulate.

One completed activity leads to another. A nervous student becomes a little more willing to try. A student who needed considerable encouragement on day one may volunteer themselves for something new later in the program.

That progression is one of the reasons adventure camps can have such a lasting impact.

    Taking Confidence Back to School

The real value of camp becomes apparent when students return home.

They come back with shared stories, new friendships and plenty of memorable moments, but they can also return with a slightly different understanding of themselves.

A difficult classroom task can be approached by a student who now knows what it feels like to persevere. A child facing a new situation can remember that they have successfully adapted before. A quieter student may carry greater confidence into their friendships after discovering that they have skills their classmates respect.

Adventure gives children an opportunity to practise courage in a very practical way.

And when students discover for themselves that they can tackle something challenging, that confidence can begin to influence every part of their lives.
