Fully Facilitated School Camps: What Does ItMean?

When comparing school camps, you'll often see the term **fully facilitated**.

But what does it actually mean?

Simply put: the camp team runs the activities, so teachers don't have to.

At The Summit, our trained facilitators lead the activity program, manage equipment, explain challenges and guide students through each experience.

Teachers remain responsible for their students, including supervision, behaviour and wellbeing, but they're not expected to become adventure activity instructors.

What Does a Camp Facilitator Do?

Our facilitators do more than explain the rules.

    They:

    • lead activities
    • manage equipment
    • encourage participation
    • support nervous students
    • build teamwork and communication
    • adapt challenges where appropriate
    • keep the program moving
    • help students reflect on what they achieved

The goal isn't simply to complete an activity.

It's to help students learn from it.

    Less Pressure on Teachers

School camps are rewarding, but they can also be exhausting.

    Teachers are already managing:

    • student wellbeing
    • behaviour
    • medication
    • accommodation
    • schedules
    • homesickness
    • school expectations

A fully facilitated program removes much of the activity delivery workload.

Instead of running activities, teachers can focus on supporting and observing their students.

    See Students Differently

Camp often brings out qualities that aren't always visible in the classroom.

A quiet student may become a leader.

A confident student may learn to listen.

A nervous student may surprise themselves by taking on a challenge.

When teachers aren't busy running the activity, they have more opportunity to notice these moments.

    Supporting Every Student

Not every student arrives at camp feeling confident.

For some, camp means new people, new activities, heights, physical challenges or their first nights away from home.

Good facilitation isn't about forcing every student to do the same thing.

It's about helping each student find their own level of challenge and recognise their progress.

    Success looks different for everyone.

    Programs Built Around Your Goals

A school camp should be more than a timetable of activities.

Programs can be designed around outcomes such as:

    • resilience
    • confidence
    • independence
    • teamwork
    • communication
    • leadership
    • belonging
    • problem-solving

    For example:

    • Year 7 camps may focus on connection and belonging.
    • Leadership camps may focus on communication and accountability.
    • Primary school camps may focus on confidence and independence.

The activities support the outcome, not the other way around.

    Fully Facilitated vs Self-Facilitated

With a self-facilitated camp, school staff may need to:

    • lead activities
    • manage equipment
    • organise groups
    • keep activities on schedule
    • facilitate student reflection

With a fully facilitated camp, the venue team manages the activity program.

That allows teachers to focus more on their students.

When comparing camp providers, don't just compare the number of activities.

    Ask:

    • Who runs them?
    • What are teachers expected to do?
    • Are facilitators trained?
    • How much of the program is actually facilitated?
    • Can the program be tailored to our goals?

    Look Beyond the Activity List

A flying fox is a flying fox.

An obstacle course is an obstacle course.

What makes the difference is how the experience is delivered.

Strong facilitation turns an activity into an opportunity to build confidence, teamwork, resilience and connection.
