On a stunning Wednesday afternoon, 2nd September, the Year 9 students and teachers from Sacred Heart College (Geelong) arrived back at The Summit, ready for a few days packed with adventure, challenge, laughter and plenty of opportunities to step outside their comfort zones.
After settling into their accommodation, the students gathered in the Lodge where Coach Spinks kicked things off with an introduction to camp and the coaching team. The Summit’s Five Keys were then shared, the secret recipe for making the most of every challenge and every moment at camp!
The Five Keys
- Have Fun
- Play All In
- Make Lots of Mistakes
- Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
- Don’t Go Home Wondering “What If”
Day One – Activities & Tribe Names
With the mindset locked in, the students headed down to their activity spaces where they received their Helmet and Harness briefing before being introduced to an epic goal-setting strategy: Target, Stretch and Super Stretch.
Whether it was something they knew they could achieve, something they thought they could do, or something that seemed impossible, the challenge was to keep pushing those comfort zones!
Sacred Heart were split into two groups, with Tribes 1–8 taking on one set of activities and Tribes 9–16 tackling another.
Across camp, students challenged themselves on:
- Abseil
- Snake & Nails
- Inflatables
- High Wire
- Bag Blitz
- Giant Swing
- Sky Bridge
- Snowy River Challenge
- Summit Window
- Jump Free
- Laser Skirmish
- Bush Challenge
- Rockwall
- Orienteering
- Flying Fox
- Leap of Faith
After their first two rotations, the Tribes got creative and came up with some seriously memorable names:
- Quiche
- Ms Masons Favs
- Chubby Chudsters
- Thriving Thirteen
- Supreme Stars
- Chicken
- Swirls
- Wombat Warriors
- Octanoughts
- Camp Rocks
- John Pork
- Danmus Donughts
- Hot Chicks and Chicken Salt
- The Leapers
- Swirl
- Maple Imposters
The students were also introduced to one of The Summit’s favourite traditions—GMICs, or “Great Moments In Camp”. From hilarious moments to courageous breakthroughs, GMICs are all about recognising the little moments that make camp unforgettable.
Day Two – Huckle Buckle, Jockeys & Mud!
Day Two kicked off with Groups 1–8 taking on Huckle Buckle while Groups 9–16 got stuck into Jockeys before launching into three legendary activity rotations.
The weather may have been mixed, but Sacred Heart didn’t let that stop them. They powered through, smashed goals and continued to play all in across the activities.
After lunch, it was time for one of the biggest challenges of camp: the famous Mud Run Challenge!
This was a true test of teamwork, strength and resilience. The students completed their first lap, only to discover that the winning team wouldn’t necessarily be the fastest…
Instead, it would be the team that improved the most on their second lap!
With the pressure on, the Tribes headed back into the mud and gave it everything they had. A huge effort from everyone!
The Monster Course
The Monster Course improvement challenge put the Five Keys into action.
Rather than simply rewarding speed, students were challenged to improve on their own performance. It was all about resilience, persistence and refusing to give up when things got tough.
And there were some seriously impressive improvements across the Tribes!
Final Day – Gratitude, Reflection & Tank Time
As the final day rolled around, Coaches Lucy and Fish led the students through a gratitude and intention session. Everyone was encouraged to stop, think and reflect on who or what they were grateful for before “checking back in” for the final two activity rotations.
Groups A and B swapped games, with Groups 1–8 taking on Jockeys and Groups 9–16 tackling Huckle Buckle.
After the final activities, it was time to celebrate the people who had truly embodied the spirit of The Summit.
Each Tribe was asked to vote for the person who best represented the Five Keys throughout camp.
These 16 legends showed courage, encouragement, teamwork and a willingness to get uncomfortable, and they were rewarded with Summit medals to keep as a reminder of their camp experience.
🏅 And the Values Winners Are:
- Quiche – Inayaa
- Ms Masons Favs – Bridget
- Chubby Chudsters – Evelyn
- Thriving Thirteen – Anne
- Supreme Stars – Meg
- Chicken – Leah
- Swirls – Liliana C
- Wombat Warriors – Willow
- Octanoughts – Alanna
- Camp Rocks – Tess
- John Pork – Elise
- Danmus Donughts – Abby D
- Hot Chicks and Chicken Salt – Willow
- The Leapers – Ruby
- Swirl – Molly
- Maple Imposters – Arya
After the awards, everyone headed over to the Big Tower for a huge group photo before four lucky students were selected by their teachers for a hot lap in The Summit’s very own Army Tank, with their peers cheering them on!
