On Monday the 10th of February Fairhills High School year 7 students arrived at The Summit eager to get started. The students had the opportunity to get settled into their accommodation before heading to the Lodge where they were introduced to their six phenomenal coaches; Mim, Enis, Kaara, Taylor, Spinks, and Adam. Spinks introduced the Five Keys that helped the students make the most of their camp.
These keys are:
- Have Fun
- Play All In
- Make Lots of Mistakes
- Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
- Don’t Go Home Wondering “What If”
Once the students left the Lodge and made their way down into the park, we played a game of 50 Up. The goal is to keep the exercise ball off the ground for more than 50 touches and not let it touch the ground. We succeeded in getting a score of 55. Again, the coaches had some more information before we could get started this time it was about our safety and showed us how to put on a harness as well as a helmet and a goal-setting strategy called Target, Stretch, and Super Stretch. The 6 activities that the students got to participate in were Bag Blitz, Highwire, Cave, Laser Skirmish, Bush Challenge and Sky Bridge. At the end of the first rotation, each group needed to have a team name as soon as they made a team flag and chant. The chant was important cause on the second day they were going to need to show off their flags and chants to their peers and judges who would be looking for creativity, participation and volume.
Starting the second day bright and early with a talk from Spinks who encouraged and inspired them to set a morning intention to get the most out of the day. After making a morning intention, everyone made their way down to the stage to play a game Crane, Tiger, Egg. The game aimed to not match Mim when she strikes a pose, and if you did then you would be out. Once the game was over the students headed into 3 rotations before lunch. For lunch we had delicious chicken tender wraps, shortly after lunch everyone headed to the stage because it was time to perform the chants. Then it was the much-anticipated Monster Course. At the time everyone believed that the winner was the group with the fastest time but at The Summit, the winner of the course was the team that improved their lap time the most, so everyone did two laps of the Monster Course.
Sadly, the final day of camp came too soon, Mim was the one that inspired everyone to remember to be grateful for those around us and the power of gratitude. This was then followed by a game of Pirates where 10 students got to join Adam’s pirate crew before heading into the last two rotations of camp. In our last activity, we reflected on all of the camp and picked a Values winner from our groups. A Values winner was someone the students voted for that they believed showed The Summit’s Five Keys the most. Finally, at the end of camp, the results were read out and we had to say goodbye to not only our coaches before getting on the bus.
