School Camps in Victoria: Why Every Student Deserves theExperience

    October 2026

Every Victorian student deserves the opportunity to experience school camp. Now, Victoria's peak outdoor education body is calling for that opportunity to become a reality.

On 23 October 2026, Outdoors Victoria called on the Victorian Government to help ensure every student has the opportunity to attend at least one camp in nature during primary school and one during secondary school.

It's a proposal that recognises something teachers see firsthand: some of the most valuable learning happens outside the classroom.

School camps create opportunities for students to build confidence, develop resilience, strengthen friendships and discover what they're truly capable of.

But for schools planning their next camp, there's another important question: How do we deliver an unforgettable experience without adding unnecessary pressure to teachers?

Taking the pressure off teachers with fully facilitated school camps

At The Summit, we believe teachers should have the opportunity to see their students grow, not spend their entire camp organising activities.

Located in Trafalgar East, Gippsland, approximately 90 minutes from Melbourne, The Summit specialises in fully facilitated primary and secondary school camps.

Our experienced team leads scheduled adventure activities, safety briefings, team challenges and program reflections, while teachers continue to support and supervise their students.

With more than 40 activities, onsite accommodation and catering, we make organising a school camp simpler.

That means more time for teachers to connect with their students, celebrate achievements and witness the moments that make school camps so valuable.

More than adventure: building confidence that lasts beyond camp

A great school camp isn't just about trying exciting activities. It's about what students discover along the way.

At The Summit, our programs encourage students to:

    • Step outside their comfort zones in a supportive environment.
    • Build resilience through achievable challenges.
    • Develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
    • Form stronger connections with classmates.
    • Celebrate effort, improvement and personal growth.

Whether it's encouraging a friend through the Giant Swing, working together on the Monster Course or setting a personal goal, each experience creates an opportunity to grow.

Our recent Croydon Hills Primary School Year 5 camp is one example of students embracing teamwork, setting goals and celebrating one another's achievements.

These are the moments students remember long after they return to the classroom.

Making school camps more accessible for Victorian families

Outdoors Victoria's proposal also highlights the importance of removing financial barriers that prevent students from attending camp.

The Victorian Government's Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) provides valuable assistance to eligible families.

In 2026, the fund provides $400 per eligible student to help cover approved school activities, including camps. Funding is paid to schools, with eligibility and allocation rules applying.

Schools planning for 2027 should check the latest funding arrangements and eligibility requirements.

Every student deserves the chance to take part, and understanding the support available is an important step towards making that happen.
